What Causes Headaches?

There are many causes of headaches. Some, like loud noises, are obvious. Others may be a little more difficult to pinpoint. Stress, dehydration, sinus inflammation, and a wide range of other seemingly unrelated issues can have adverse effects and lead to headaches. We will ask you some questions to help discern the underlying cause of your headaches so we can provide personalized treatment. One of the many causes of headaches is TMJ dysfunction.

Why Does TMJ Dysfunction Occur?

The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) connect the jaw to the skull bone. When they are functioning properly, the TMJ allows you to speak, chew, smile, and yawn without pain. When the TMJ is damaged or strained, the result is difficult or painful jaw movements. This can lead to several adverse effects, including chronic headaches.

How are Headaches & TMJ Dysfunction Treated?

If you have chronic headaches or migraines, we will begin by helping you determine the causes or triggers of your headaches. This allows us to customize your treatment plan to your unique needs. The first step you’ll take is eliminating headache triggers, such as:

  • Smoking
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Lack of exercise and poor dietary habits
  • Poor ergonomics and posture concerns (sitting at desks or in a car for long periods, repetitive motion, etc.)
  • Insufficient sleep

As we work with you to make behavioral changes to avoid your headache triggers, we may also recommend the use of preventive medications to help you stop headaches before they begin.

For patients with chronic headaches related to TMJ dysfunction, we offer advanced diagnoses and treatment planning that takes advantage of the latest technologies. We use the K7 and TENS systems. K7 is a unique tool that allows us to precisely monitor your jaw movement. You may feel a little silly with it on your face during diagnosis, but the results can’t be paralleled. This tool tells us exactly where your TMJ is strained and allows us to plan for precise treatment. We can then use an oral appliance to reposition the jaw during sleep, preventing unconscious movements.

We may also recommend treatment using the TENS system. This advanced technology uses electronic vibrations to stimulate nerves and relieve pain. Whatever treatment we try, we’ll keep working until you are pain-free.
